If you're sun-sensitive, clothing is your first line of defense. But not all fabric protects the same. That's where UPF comes in.
What UPF means
UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) tells you how much UV gets through a fabric. A UPF 50 fabric lets through only about 1/50th of UV rays, blocking roughly 98%. UPF 30 blocks about 97%. A plain white cotton T-shirt can be as low as UPF 5, and less when wet.
What to look for
- A UPF label: UPF 50+ is the top rating.
- Long sleeves and a collar: more coverage, less sunscreen to manage.
- Light, breathable fabric: you'll actually wear it in the heat.
- Built-in protection: protection woven into the fabric doesn't wash out.
Our picks
- Laguna UPF 50+ Women's Sun Shirt: blocks 98% of UVA/UVB with no chemical coating; light and quick-drying.
- Men's VentTEK Shirt: breathable button-front with built-in sun protection.
- Lightweight Ice-Silk Sun Jacket: a featherweight hooded layer to throw over anything.
- Kids UPF 50+ Straw Sun Hat: because sun habits start young.
Care tips
Wash UPF clothing gently and avoid stretching it. Stretched or worn-thin fabric lets more light through.
